Here are a selection of some of my favourite books on the craft of film editing:
The Eye Is Quicker: by Richard D. Pepperman
Filled with dozens of examples from a wide selection of films, this is a great ‘how to guide’ on the craft of film editing.
Grammar of the edit: by Roy Thompson and Christopher J. Bowen
From the basic vocabulary of editing to knowing when to cut and why, this book is designed as an ‘easy to use’ reference for all filmmakers.
Cutting Rhythms: Shaping the film edit: by Karen Pearlman
Less of a technical guide to editing, this book offers a more psychological and philosophical approach to why and where we should make edits and why certain edits feel right and some just feel wrong. Filled with ideas and easy to do exercises, this is the book that will stretch your mind.
The Film Editing Room Handbook: by Norman Hollyn
Everything an assistant editor needs to know on the job- from pre-production to the shoot, to editing and adding visual effects and sound, to the mix and colour finishing. Walk into any cutting room with this under your arm and you’ll be sure to keep the wolves at bay!
